Monique
Ryan, MS, RD, LDN is
a nationally recognized nutritionist with over twenty-five
years of professional experience. She is founder of Personal
Nutrition Designs, a nutrition consulting company based
in the Chicago area. Started in 1992, Personal Nutrition
Designs provides nutrition programs for diverse groups
of people with an emphasis on long-term follow-up and
support programming. Monique has developed thousands of
nutrition plans for clients in the areas of sports nutrition,
weight management, women’s health, eating disorder
recovery, various medical and health concerns, and disease
prevention and wellness. She provides her clients with
practical cutting edge nutrition information based on
current scientific research.
Monique is currently the sports dietitian
for the professional cycling team, Team Type 1, a men’s
professional cycling team that competes in Europe, Asia,
and North America. She has extensive experience working with
elite athletes and was a member of the Performance Enhancement
Team for USA Triathlon, USA Cycling (Women’s Road Team),
and Synchro Swimming USA up to the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.
She has consulted for multiple seasons with the Timex Multisport
Team, and the Chicago Fire Soccer Team, and was the nutritionist
for the Saturn Cycling Team for the 1994 to 2000 racing seasons.
Monique has also consulted with professional football, baseball
and basketball players, and team sport athletes competing
at the high school and collegiate level. She has also consulted
with many professional endurance triathletes, the Volvo-Cannondale
Mountain Bike, Rollerblade Racing, and the Trek-Volkswagen
and Gary Fisher Mountain Bike Teams. Monique has lectured
extensively on sports nutrition to coaches, athletic trainers,
and amateur athletes who train at all levels. For several
months in 2000, Monique was on sabbatical at the Australian
Institute of Sport in Canberra, Australia, one of the world’s
top training and physiology and sport nutrition research
centers. She is currently on the Medical Advisory Board of
the Chicago Area Runner’s Association (CARA).
She has presented across the US, and in
Canada, Brazil, Australia, and Thailand. Monique is quoted
frequently for sports nutrition articles and her comments
have appeared in the Chicago Tribune, New York Times, Chicago
Sun-Times, Runner’s World, Fitness, Men’s Journal,
Men’s Health, Outside, and Oxygen among other publications.
Monique is a prolific nutrition writer
and has written Sports Nutrition for Endurance
Athletes, 3rd edition (March 2012), Performance Nutrition
for Winter Sports, Performance Nutrition for Team Sports, and Complete
Guide to Sports Nutrition. She is
the author of over 175 published magazine articles. From
1991 to 2010, she was a regular contributor to VeloNews- The
Journal of Competitive Cycling, and for Inside
Triathlon from 1994 to 2010, has contributed to Outside and Oxygen.
She has also contributed to Men’s Journal,
eatright.org, kidseatright.org, Her Sports, Triathlete and Women’s
Sports & Fitness. She has appeared on CLTV,
FOX TV, and the WGN, ABC and CBS news.
Monique is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
(previously the American Dietetic Association). She is a
member of several practice groups within the Academy including
the Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutritionists (SCAN)
practice group and was Reviews Editor of SCAN’s quarterly
publication, the PULSE, for twelve years. She is also a member
of the Nutrition Entrepreneurs, and Dietitian in Integrative
and Functional Medicine practice groups.
Monique has a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition and
Dietetics, and completed her clinical training at Northwestern
Memorial Hospital Medical Center in Chicago (1984). She has
a Master of Science Degree in Nutrition (2002). She is a
registered dietitian (RD) and licensed in the state of Illinois
(LDN), and a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD).
Monique is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine
(ACSM) and is an ACSM Health Fitness Specialist (HFS). Monique
regularly participates in the sports of swimming, cycling,
running, and snowshoeing and has competed as a licensed cyclist
in the sports of road cycling and mountain biking. |
